TLDR: Tudor Black Bay Black

The Tudor Black Bay Black was launched in 2012 as a new addition to their Tudor Heritage Black Bay collection, along with the Advisor Alarm and Heritage Chrono. Their Tudor Black Bay line eventually became the brand’s flagship line since they designed various watches with three different case sizes.

One of the perks of getting a Tudor watch is that you’ll get the benefits of a Rolex watch, only at a more affordable price. The Tudor Black Bay Black is similar to a Rolex Submariner but simpler. The Tudor Black Bay Black and Tudor Heritage Black Bay also have a fair share of differences, specifically in the bracelet. Moreover, the Black Bay Black trims and sits comfortably on the wrist.

The Tudor Black Bay Black’s simple case design drew inspiration from Rolex. Its stainless steel case also includes largely polished surfaces with subtle bevels on the edges. Whereas, the tops of the lugs include brushed surfaces and provide a nice contrast.

The Black Bay watches feature a unique crown and crown tube compared to its other dive watches. The crown measures 8-millimeters and features a Tudor rose logo printed on the end. Meanwhile, the big crown stands off the case on an anodized crown tube, matching the rotating bezel and making it a visually striking feature.

Quality and Durability

The modern Tudor Black Bay is also available in two movements, namely the ETA version and in-house version for a lower price point. This collection also includes vintage pieces and used outsourced movement until the release of the Tudor North Flag.

The ETA case includes a flat case back, while the in-house versions have a rounded bubble case back. In terms of mechanical differences, the movement features a dial that’s closer to vintage Tudor pieces, making it more easily serviced but is no longer being produced.

On the other hand, the in-house movement version is Chronometer certified. This version offers a longer power reserve, satisfying those who bought the in-house movement. When it comes to timekeeping, the ETA movement provides an excellent time within COSC specifications.

Additional Features

This dive watch offers a water resistance depth of up to 200 meters, which is not that deep compared to other dive watches. However, this Tudor Black Bay watch still maintains a high visibility level and implied water resistance throughout.

Another feature to look at the Tudor Black Bay Black is the anti-reflective sapphire crystal, which is finished in a slight dome, easy to read, and gives a vintage look.

The Tudor Black Bay Black watch includes a simple diving bezel, including 120 clicks around the circumference and single-minute ticks during the first 15 minutes, followed by 10-minute intervals. Its bezel is sturdy and the indicators directly snap to each minute marker.

This dive watch by Tudor Black Bay Black also uses a modernized snowflake hand. This feature allows the hour hand-up to jump off the dial at glance, making the time easy to read. Lastly, the dial is another feature to admire about this dive watch. For the red bezel version, its gilt dial consists of gold accents and a vintage lume. Meanwhile, you will find silver accents and white lume in the blue bezel version.

Warranty

Every Tudor watch is subjected to a stringent set of tests to ensure it’s precision and reliability. Tudor’s confidence in their ever-stricter quality assurance allows them to set a new standard in watchmaking.

All Tudor watches purchased on or after January the 1st 2020 hold a five-year international guarantee. Meanwhile, all Tudor watches purchased from July 1st, 2018 to December 31st, 2019 will receive an 18-month guarantee extension for a total guarantee of three and a half years.

What Do People Say About It?

Amazon

Thomas Hearns rated the Black Bay Black watch a high star rating and called it a “killer value.” According to Hearns, the dive watch is a perfect size and its relation to Rolex is obvious. As a watch enthusiast, he also claimed that the entire Tudor line is superb, especially with their new in-house movement that can keep a 70-hour power reserve.

He wrote, “I am not a gold fan of wristwatches but the very subtle outlines of the dots and hands add some great sizzle to this piece. I own three black bays – one with the older ETA movement, and two with the new movement.

If there is one thing I am not crazy about, it’s the riveted bracelet but apparently, I am in the minority on this. The older versions have the steel bracelet with no rivets which I think is cleaner. However, of the three I won, this one gets the most wear.

This is the best value price for any luxury timepiece out there. By a mile.”

YouTube

Worn and Wound filmed a video reviewing the Tudor Black Bay Ref 79230N. After explaining its specifications, they wrapped up the video by stating that the Tudor Black Bay Black 2016 watch was, without a doubt, a gorgeous and beautifully made watch.

However, one flaw that they mentioned about the tool watch is its snowflake hand, which doesn’t work well with the circular dots as a circular pointed hand. On the bright side, it still looks aesthetically pleasing.

Overall, the tool watch is beautiful, looks good on the wrist, has a great manufacturing movement, and is exceptionally well-made.

The Verdict: Should You Buy It?

We created an in-depth review of the Tudor Black Bay Black watch to take a closer look at the dive watch. While it has some similar references to the Rolex Submariner and the brand’s history, it still features a few excellent features that separate and stand out from its other watches from the Black Bay collection.

We highly recommend you to buy the Tudor Black Bay Black watch as the newest addition to your watch collection. This Tudor watch is perfect for those who are looking for a modern watch that has the quality of a Rolex Submariner for a more reasonable price. Some of its excellent features include an ETA and in-house movement, a 70-hour power reserve, an anti-reflective sapphire crystal, and 200-meter water resistance.
