Not everyone prefers to wear a wristwatch nowadays since we have many ways to tell time. The most common one, of course, is a smartphone that is almost always glued to our hands.

Good thing the greats of the watch world continued making beautiful timepieces and made their way into the vintage watch market. Prices on some well-known vintage models – think Omega Speedmasters, Rolex Submariners, and the like – have exploded over the past decade.

What once could be bought for $500 now costs about $1,000, and a few other models cost more. But fear not, as many less popular models come of good value. The Longines Heritage 1945 watch is one. And whoo boy, this is an absolute interpretation of a mid-century timepiece.

And as someone passionate about vintage pieces, I was immediately drawn to the idea of writing about the Longines Heritage 1945. So, if you want to know more about this timepiece, keep reading as I focus on its unique beauty and complexities in this review.

TL;DR: Review of the Longines Heritage 1945 Watch

The Longines Heritage 1945 watch is a vintage timepiece. Many vintage watches in the Longines Museum in Switzerland inspired many timepieces from the Heritage collection.

And if there’s such a brand that devoted its portfolio to resurrecting watches from its long, creative history, that’s Longines.

Anyways, the Longines Heritage 1945  is a 40mm analog watch with 20 mm thickness. It features a gorgeous brushed copper dial, reliable automatic movement, 30 meters water-resistance depth, and a calfskin band material. It’s a watch that combines graceful and rough design elements.

I love how unique the hour and minute hands look that complemented the little second hand. By its size, you know it sits well on the wrist – not too large nor too small for men. It’s a watch you can wear every day and even look best with navy suits

As for the case material, it’s made of polished stainless steel. It’s a plus point for me because you can guarantee its hardness strength and oxidation resistance, meaning it won’t’ turn black. It’s also durable because of the scratch-resistant sapphire crystal in its dial window.

Powering this Longines watch is a caliber L609 (ETA 2895/2), which offers a serviceable and reliable operation. It has 25,800 v.p.h frequency – enough for dependable and accurate timekeeping. With a robust movement architecture and a 42-hour power reserve, what more can you ask for?

Overall, the timepiece is a beautiful, well-priced, and balanced timepiece.

Pros

  • Vintage style
  • Features caliber L609 (ETA 2895/2)
  • Water-resistant
  • Strap feels very comfortable
  • Dependable timekeeping
  • High power reserve
  • Automatic mechanical movement
  • Good brand
  • Attractive blue hands with brushed copper style
  • Good movement
  • Scratch resistant sapphire crystal

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Placement of the seconds sub-dial is a little off (too high-up or close to the center)

Is it worth it?

If a vintage watch is your preference, the Longines Heritage 1945 watch is a great deal. Its features speak more than just a typical vintage or dress watch. There are some absolute bargains with this model in the vintage watch market, partly because of its quality and durability.

I see it as an elegant dress piece that lasts long into the future.

When you buy the Longines Heritage 1945, you are assured that the timepiece is not something you will see anybody else wearing.

In-Depth Review of the Longines Heritage 1945

(A Timepiece Based on Patek Philippe Calatrava Dress Watch)

History

The entire Longines Heritage Collection itself must have seemed an oddball idea back then. That’s because they sprang before vintage-inspired or retro-look watches were the rage. Yet, undeniably, the brand produced one of the most historically significant timepieces and movements- their Hour Angle Watch in 1931 and its first self-winding movement (caliber 22A) in 1945.

And even today, their Longines Heritage 1945 classic continues to receive great attention from watch collectors.

Design: minimalist style

This vintage model has such an attractive, clean design. The dial features clever details – a slight copper color with a metallic effect that matches the retro character of this watch model.

Some say the dial was overdone, that it’s not easy to tell time, but I don’t see it that way.

Added to the stunning design are the Arabic numerals accompanied by flame blue hands. At the 6 o’clock position, you’ll see a small second sub-dial finished in a bright background tone.

It’s also pleasing that Longines resist adding a date feature for this timepiece, as they’ve done with their other watches. Doing so gave a perfect balance to this watch’s beautiful clean design.

At the back of this new Longines Heritage watch is an engraved EFCo decoration. It’s a beautiful embellishment that refers to Ernest Francillon, founder of Longines. To complete the vintage appeal of this timepiece, it comes with a leather strap and a stainless steel buckle.

Movement

For some vintage watch lovers would have loved that this original watch had a manual winding movement (caliber 12.68Z, for instance, used in the original model) since it’s more practical. Still, the automatic mechanical movement in this timepiece is pretty accurate. Its high BPH furthermore increases the reliability of this model – a feature you’ll appreciate for many years to come.

Quality and Durability

Worth mentioning in this Longines Heritage 1945 review is its durability. The 40mm case of this watch is all steel and provides 30 meters of water resistance. So, it means it withstands quick handwashing and water droplets.

The stainless steel material is rigid and can’t be easily affected by sweat and moisture. You can guarantee that the materials used in this watch have a very long life.

Additional Features

This watch house 27 jewels for smooth self-winding, making the movement more reliable.

With a slightly rounded crown, a flat bezel, and long curved lugs, this timepiece has an obvious mid-1940s to 1950s styling. It looks simple but not overly fussy.

Who is it Best for?

The Longines Heritage 1945 is best for any watch collector, especially those who like retro designs. This exact watch is both timeless and elegant.

I also recommend this to gents who prefer a clean dial and want to see symmetry in their great watches. Since this model does not have a date window, the dial doesn’t appear cluttered.

What Do People Say About it?

Amazon

An Amazon customer from the US gave this timepiece a 5-star rating. She wrote, “It’s great. It was delivered fast, and everything [was] ok. This is a perfect choice for those looking for a watch that has class, with a style, heritage and good brand.”

YouTube

Just One More Watch said, “It is drop-dead gorgeous… [It] has a lovely dial. They call it brushed copper. It is such a honey. They haven’t gone for that super retro full acrylic look, but it [has] e piece of sapphire [dial.] There’s plenty of space on the dial to accommodate a slightly bigger small second. I don’t think the dial looks unbalanced.”

Meanwhile, Wristwatchism shared, “It looks stunning, especially in the evening with low light and candlelight. It’s a brilliant watch. I’m pleased with it. It [also has] a nice hand-stitched vintage strap… It sits just perfectly on my wrist – not too thick. It slips under the cuff of a shirt and works perfectly in more dressy occasions or [when wearing] jeans or a T-shirt.”

Reddit

“Recently purchased a Longines Heritage 1945. I’m enjoying this watch far more than I thought I was! Perfect size for me at 40mm, and the dial on this seems to change colors in different lights, making it quite pleasing to the eye,” a Reddit user shared.

In another thread, a new Longines Heritage 1945 owner wrote, “I bought another Longines after falling in love with the dial; I fell hard. I love the brushed finish and how it plays with the light. It’s also really comfortable too; the strap is great.”

Honorable Mentions: Best Longines Watches

If you’re looking for other alternatives, Longines never fall short in their collection of elegant timepieces. More than 1,200 different models (dial color and strap option variation included) are in the company’s catalog.

Here are some of the best Longines watches you can consider:

Conquest V.H.P.

Conquest V.H.P. has held high value for a long time. The original version of this watch was first released in 1984, and the brand continued to develop the movement used in the original timepiece over the next decade.

Now, they have the Conquest V.H.P., a watch built to last. And just in case you’re wondering, VHP stands for “very high precision.” The name alone is an indication of the highlight of this timepiece – it’s exact.

The new Conquest V.H.P. is available in either a black PVD-coated stainless steel or silver stainless steel case and has a dial with luminous markers. It features a date window at the 3 o’clock position and offers 50m water resistance. A plus point for this Longines timepiece is it has an EOL of the end-of-life battery indicator, telling you to change the battery within six months of EOL activation.

Longines HydroConquest Steel Diving Watch

Longines HydroConquest Steel Diving Watch is a model available in the market for a good ten years. And it stays that long in the market because it offers excellent value for money.

You see, the HydroConquest is an attractive timepiece. Since it is an automatic diving watch, its feature highlights its impressive 300m water resistance rating. It is powered by a mechanical Longines 633 movement, a rebadged ETA 2824. It’s a movement that is easy to have serviced.

So, even if you’re not particularly interested in diving, this diving watch is something to fall in love with. I find it a well-built sports watch due to its high water resistance rating and solid build.

Longines Présence

The 38.5 mm Longines Présence is one of those timepieces that play up. The silver-tone stainless steel, white dial, and stainless steel band give the wearer an outstanding wrist presence without overspending.

It’s a relative bargain. Other exciting features of this timepiece are the fixed bezel, 100 feet water resistance, and date window at the 3 o’clock position.

The Longines Master Collection

The Longines Master Collection Moonphase watch is an excellent entry point into luxury precious metal watches. Indeed, it delivers with a punch.

The blue hands enhance its silver dial. At 42mm, it’s both wearable and dapper. The brown leather band is also comfortable on the wrist and features automatic movement. It’s durable, too, as it uses scratch-resistant sapphire in its dial window and is water-resistant for up to 30 meters.

Longines placed the moon phase complication at the six o’clock position to reinforce the Swiss design.

The Verdict: Should I Buy the Longines Heritage 1945 Watch?

Yes, you should buy the Longines Heritage 1945 watch if you can and if you want. It’s a fine, handsome timepiece you can cherish and pass down to the next generation.

From a design perspective, some say a smaller size of this watch would have been better. But the 40mm is spot-on to many – me included.

As for its materials, many would take pleasure in it for years because it’s just that durable. Investing in this timepiece or other vintage watch, for that matter, may be daunting at first, but once you start, you’ll never look back, and it’s worth adding to your investment portfolio.

The brand demonstrated that people still find well-priced vintage timepieces with this timepiece.

Bravo to the Longines team; this Longines Heritage 1945 watch is a home run.
