Movado is an American watchmaker that is known for its minimalist style and signature metallic dot at 12 o’clock. In the Esperanto language, its brand name means “always in motion.”
True enough, such a meaning reflects the watchmaker’s commitment to horological innovation. Movado watches also won the hearts of people for their artistic features and high quality.
However, despite such an achievement, some may still find the Movado price a little too much for a wristwatch. That’s because they’ve increased their prices to a range that matches other luxury watches and to a point where one may wonder whether Movado watches are really worth the price.
In today’s post, we’re going to find out the answer to that. Are Movado watches of good quality? And if you’re thinking about buying a Movado watch, we’ve also provided you with some of its best models to suit your style.
But for us to fully appreciate the brand and find out if it’s truly a good watch, let’s take a few steps back in time. To be more precise, to 1881.
Movado Brand History
The brand was started by Achilles Ditesheim, then 19 years old, and right after he completed his horological studies. In 1881, he hired 6 watchmakers and opened a small shop in Switzerland.
A couple of years passed and he was able to make his dream a reality and their modest laboratory grew to be a full-scale factory that employed 80 people by 1897.
This was such an achievement at that time when you compare it to other watchmakers in the industry. A feat that was comparable to LeCoultre that employed 100 people while the Audemars Piguet only had 10 people at that time.
The company’s operations were back then limited to assembling and mounting movements into their very own pocket watches. They were not yet using the Movado brand during this time, but instead operated under the name L.A.&l. Ditesheim, fabricants.
It was in May 1903 when the now-iconic brand, “Movado” surfaced. But it would take two more years before the company officially used and traded using that name.
The Movado Group
In 1983, the Movado Group was established. Under this new formation was the rebirth of their iconic Museum Watch in different styles.
Gedalio Grinberg, Movado Group’s founder, played an instrumental part in overcoming the sector’s challenging period in the 1970s. The visionary entrepreneur, who sold his first clock in native Cuba for $18 when he was only 15 years old, was also critical in the creation of luxury watch marketing.
Even during a time when watches were still considered utilitarian necessities, Grinberg started advertising in magazines that the watches he distributed (particularly the Piaget watches) were the “most expensive watch in the world.” His campaign worked brilliantly and more success followed.
Soon, Movado Group Inc. became a major player in the global watch industry. It is also the company behind 10 widely respected watch brands apart from Movado. These brands include the Watches, Tommy Hilfiger Watches, EBEL, Concord, Olivia Burton, Coach Watches, HUGO BOSS Watches, Scuderia Ferrari, MVMT, and Lacoste watches.
Present Day
Efraim Grinberg, the CEO of Movado Group Inc., is a man on a mission. He wants to prove that millennials like and will still wear analog timepieces. He also believes that classic wristwatches have that enduring appeal worthy of production.
So, at present, Grinberg continues on that path of continuing to have young people interested in the beauty and design of traditional analog watches.
There are also many versions of the popular Museum Classic watches now that are available in the market, most of which have 28mm or 40mm dial sizes. If you take a look at many Movado watches nowadays, you’ll likewise notice that they come with different types of bracelets.
One of Movado’s latest developments is the Movado Connect, which provides the option of wearing a modern watch or a more traditional-looking design watch.
And just like other smartwatches, the smartwatch also allows users to receive notifications, use apps, and respond to messages. It is even somewhat costly compared to a Samsung galaxy watch or Apple watch.
Now, on to the next question…
Are Movado Watches a Good Investment?

The answer to this question depends on what you are looking for in a timepiece. If you prefer a classy business-like watch, then yes, Movado watches definitely make a good investment.
Their timepieces are not just about looks but are also renowned for their fine quality and dependent ability. More than that, their watches are being acknowledged for style and fashion.
Everything from dial to strap and even the hands provides style. Their signature one dot design is very classy, but for some, it makes it a little difficult to read the time. With no minute and hour markers, one had to approximate time. Of course, there are other watches without the signature one dot.
When objectively assessed, a Movado watch can also be just as good as its Swiss competitors, like Hamilton and Tissot, which produce better-equipped watches for the same price range. Compared to the typical Movado quartz, its Swiss competitors even offer automatic timepieces.
But as a fashion watch brand, Movado is way better to a point that it can compete in the same category as Victorinox and Bulova while exceeding Invicta, Nordgreen, Fossil, and Skagen.
Is Movado a luxury watch?
Movado is portrayed as an expensive brand. It specializes in producing luxury watches. However, you can still find accessible fashion watches, each recognized for its distinctive image and inherent quality within the price category.
How long do Movado watches last?
Movado watches can last for many years with proper maintenance. Focusing on its quartz watches, they feature a 1.55 Volt silver-oxide battery that can approximately last for 18 to 36 months and as long as not subject to any extreme conditions.
Many Movado watches are also designed with the end-of-life feature, wherein the seconds will begin to move haltingly in four-second increments. This indicates that the Movado watch’s energy has almost run out and needs a battery replacement.
Where are Movado watches made?
Movado watches are born in the company’s manufacturing facilities in Switzerland and the corporate headquarters in Paramus, New Jersey (USA).
But since most of the Movado watches have the Swiss Made tag, it means that its movements still are Swiss. Several years back, Movado employed the Swiss movements but manufactured their Movado Bold collection in China to attract fashion-conscious young people with Movado watches at lower prices.

My name is Eve Acosta and I’m the person behind this site. Watches are what get me ticking ;).
No, but seriously, I just love watches, I have over 30 myself. It’s an obsession of mine, which is why my husband recommended me to put my hobby into some good use and build this site – so I did.
My passion for timepieces came from the fact that my parents own a small chain of shops selling timepieces. I’ve worked at the shop since I was 11 and fell in love with the merchandise.
